Michael Chekhov’s Psychological Gesture

The Psychological Gesture ('PG') is Chekhov's most famous creation.  Simply put, instead of the actor thinking his or her way into feelings, we use gestures to create feelings in the body which then cause thoughts to come up. The body itself becomes the source of impulses.

We work together to put the barking dog of negative self-criticism back in its kennel for a good long snooze!  This could usefully be learnt by everyone on the planet!

Imagination or Knowledge?

_Albert Einstein stated, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”  When we are creating a performance, we make choices.  If we are selecting only from a list of fixed choices that we already know, our performance can become stale.  So, in class we give the imagination muscle a good workout!

The 'Beauty' Exercises

Michael Chekhov believed passionately that actors are creative artists, rather than mere craftsmen.  These exercises sharpen the awareness of the deep inner beauty of people, places & objects, and with that comes compassion, even for the most outwardly unappealing characters. The individual's responses to beauty are then drawn upon in the creation of performances of deeper humanity.
